Emerging story

After Zohran Mamdani won as New York City’s mayor, social media users widely circulated a video claiming to show New York police arresting ICE officers deployed in the city.

An X user shared the footage with the caption, “So glad ICE is getting arrested. Thank you New York police for protecting our people.”

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigated the viral video and found it to be fake; the video was generated using artificial intelligence.

AI Slop Shows NYPD Arresting ICE Officers

Misbar’s team conducted a detailed analysis and discovered that the clip was created using AI software.

Hive Moderation, an AI detection tool, confirmed that the video was about 85% likely to contain deepfake or AI-generated elements.

Misbar’s investigative team also revealed several inconsistencies in the short clip, including unnatural movements by the police officers, overlapping of AI-rendered figures, and a strange scene where one of the supposed ICE officers appears to walk alone while handcuffed.

In addition, the police car was unrealistic, with an officer opening the trunk to place the ICE officers inside.

The ICE uniforms did not match standard designs, and the bystanders’ faces appeared poorly rendered. The footage also used artificially generated audio.

Trump Threatened to Punish New Yorkers If Zohran Wins

At his first news conference after victory, the 34-year-old democratic socialist said New Yorkers were confronting twin crises. These include the worsening affordability problem and what he described as “an authoritarian administration” under President Trump.

“It’ll be my job to deliver on both,” Zohran Mamdani said. “It will be my job to stand up for the city.”

Trump, a Queens native, has been a dominant presence in his hometown’s political scene throughout the election. He warned that if voters chose Mamdani, he might cut federal funding to New York, claiming it would be difficult to provide “a lot of money” to a city led by someone with left-leaning policies who would “waste” it.

Mamdani said he would hold federal agents enforcing Trump’s immigration policies to the same legal standards as anyone else, suggesting ICE officers could face arrest if they assaulted New Yorkers.

Even before Mamdani’s victory, Trump proposed the idea of arresting him or revoking his citizenship if he refused to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement.

Zohran Mamdani Elected as New Mayor of New York City

Zohran Mamdani, 34, has won New York City’s mayoral race in an election that energized young voters and reignited debate over the Democratic Party’s future.

The Democrat defeated former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent, becoming the youngest person in more than a century to lead America’s largest city.

Mamdani centered his campaign on affordability, pledging to expand social programs funded through new taxes on wealthy individuals and corporations.

Mamdani’s victory also marks a historic milestone as he is the first South Asian and Muslim to serve as New York City’s mayor. In his victory speech, he hailed the result as the beginning of “a new age.”
