The official X account of the Israeli army claimed that Palestinians in Gaza had violated the ceasefire, with “two suspects” crossing the yellow line, which marks Israeli-controlled territory. The two “carried out suspicious activities and approached the troops in southern Gaza,” the army claimed on November 29. In response, the military “eliminated the suspects to remove the threat.”

However, what happened on the ground offers a contradictory narrative.

Israel Kills Two Children After Labeling an Immediate Threat

An hour before the Israeli military published the X post, local media reports stated that an Israeli drone killed two children, Fadi and Goma Abu Assi, aged eight and 11, in Bani Suhaila, located on the Israeli-controlled side of the yellow Lline in eastern Khan Younis.

In an admission to the strike, the Israeli army told the BBC that its forces had struck two suspects who had crossed the yellow line when asked about the killing of the children.

According to Reuters, what the Israeli military described as “suspicious activities” was the act of gathering wood to help their disabled, wheelchair-bound father start a fire.

The Deadly Ambiguity of the Yellow Line in Gaza

Although Israeli War Minister Israel Katz announced that the yellow line would be marked by clear markers to serve as a warning to both Hamas and the residents of Gaza, not all areas are marked consistently.

In the case of eastern villages, such as Bani Suhaila, where the two children were killed, most of these places do not have clear boundaries to separate the green zones from the yellow line.

Residents who live near Bani Suhaila reported that the yellow line is “an imaginary line.” Imad, a resident who came to the eastern area to collect items from a damaged house, told Haaretz that it is only civilians who approach the yellow line, “Hamas members know very well they have no business there… the army knows this, and therefore the shooting is not security enforcement but punishment.”

The ambiguous enforcement of the yellow line boundaries threatens the lives of civilians and especially children, who are likely unaware of the line.

The killing of Abu Assi's children confirms that the Israeli army applies a policy of indiscriminate killing in the yellow areas, similar to the killings in the Netzarim corridor before the ceasefire.

Recurring Pattern of Labeling Civilians as “Suspects”

The killing of Fadi and Goma Abu Assi is not an isolated incident. Rather, it reflects a long-standing Israeli pattern of labeling Palestinian civilians—including children, journalists, and unarmed residents—as “suspects,” “terrorists,” or “immediate threats” to justify lethal force.

Throughout the war, the Israeli military has repeatedly used broad, unverified accusations to rationalize targeting civilians. This pattern is well documented by international media and human rights organizations.

The pattern is visible in the killing of Palestinian journalists. For example, Israel claimed that Hossam Shabat and Mohammed Mansour — killed in airstrikes on March 24 — were “terrorists,” despite presenting no evidence. The same label was also used for Hamza al-Dahdouh and Mustafa Thuraya, who were later confirmed by a Washington Post investigation to have not engaged in any activity beyond normal journalistic work.

Nearly 500 Israeli Violations of Ceasefire

Since the announcement of the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, Israeli forces have continued carrying out strikes in Gaza almost daily.

Some breaches occurred near the Yellow Line, while others extended far beyond the agreed boundaries. Israeli troops reportedly advanced up to 300 meters beyond the yellow line in eastern Gaza City, entering previously “safe” civilian zones.

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, over 300 Palestinians have been killed and nearly 900 injured by Israeli fire since the ceasefire took effect.
