On Wednesday, footage filmed by a witness surged online, depicting the moment Renee Nicole Good, a U.S. citizen, was killed by a masked U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Minneapolis during a migrant sweep. The footage triggered a wave of outrage and shock among social media users.

The fatal shooting reportedly occurred during a migrant crackdown on Wednesday morning, when Renee Nicole was shot dead inside her car through the window.

Renee Nicole, 37, was pronounced dead after being struck by gunfire fired by a masked ICE agent who has not been publicly identified amid an ongoing investigation.

Following the shooting, several social media users shared photos of an ICE agent, claiming to reveal the real identity of the agent who shot Renee Nicole dead in her car.  “Here’s the ice agent who is alleged to be the shooter of the woman in Minneapolis Unmasked. Please share,” a user wrote on X.

However, the photos were AI-generated, and the ICE agent’s identity has not been made public, with investigations still underway. The video filmed by the witness shows the ICE agent in the same position but wearing a mask that he adjusted to further conceal his features, without revealing his identity.

A slow-motion version of the video confirmed that the masked man in the photos above was the agent who shot Renee Nicole through her car window.

Renee Nicole Good Misidentified in Viral Photos

Following the shooting, social media users shared photos claiming they depict the victim, Renee Nicole Good. “This is Renee Nicole Good, a dedicated wife and mother who was killed by Donald Trump’s ICE thugs today,” a user shared a woman’s photo and wrote on X.

Another X user shared a photo of a different woman and wrote: “Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old wife & mother, from Minneapolis, Minnesota, was killed today by Donald Trump’s ICE agents.”

However, these photos do not show the actual victim of the shooting. Images of the real Renee Nicole Good were identified and shared by news outlets. The victim was a 37-year-old poet and mother.

One of the misleading photos was falsely taken from an old Facebook post introducing “the winners and honorable mentions of The Academy of American Poets 2020 ODU College Poetry Prize,” among whom was Renee Nicole.

Outrage Over Shooting of Renee Nicole

Following the fatal shooting, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary said the ICE agent who shot Renee Nicole feared for his life and for the safety of the other officers around him.

According to the Secretary, the incident unfolded at 10:25 a.m. CT, when a group of U.S. ICE officers were conducting an operation in the city and one of their vehicles was “stuck and ensnared in the snow” and, as the officers attempted to push the vehicle, a “mob of agitators that had been harassing them all day” allegedly blocked them and tried to impede their efforts.

The Secretary accused Renee Nicole of “stalking and impeding” the ICE officers’ work throughout the day. When the agents ordered her to exit the car, the DHS claimed that she refused and then attempted to “weaponize her vehicle” to run over the officer. Meanwhile, several Democrats argued that this story was not accurate.

Officials have disputed claims that the shooting was self-defense. However, Renee’s family denied reports that she would have been “part of anything like” the protests against ICE taking place at the location where she was killed.

According to reports, Renee was shot three times in the face after ignoring ICE agents’ orders to exit her car and attempted to drive away instead.

The Daily Mail, citing witnesses, claimed that Renee Nicole and her wife were acting as “legal observers” and filming the protest when she was shot. However, ICE maintained that she tried to use her car as a “weapon.”

Widely shared footage of the scene showed the victim blocking the road with her car when an ICE vehicle stopped, and agents allegedly told her to move. She then reversed to head back down the road as an agent tried to open the driver-side door. Then three shots were fired, striking her three times, causing her to lose control of the vehicle and crash into parked cars and a light pole.

In a joint statement, members of the Minneapolis City Council demanded that ICE leave the city. “An ICE agent shot and killed Renee Nicole Good, a member of our community […] Anyone who kills someone in our city deserves to be arrested, investigated, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” the statement reads. However, the DHS later confirmed that ICE operations were still underway despite the shooting.

Additional Democrats in Minnesota and across the country condemned ICE for the shooting and called for them to leave the city.

The incident sparked widespread criticism, outrage, and allegations after the DHS Secretary defended and justified the agent’s actions, describing Renee Nicole’s conduct as “an act of domestic terrorism.” However, analysis of the video by other sources suggested that the victim was trying to move away with her car, and the agent still fired at her, even though she posed no threat and could not have harmed him, arguing that this was therefore not a case of self-defense.
