Satellite Images Show Ongoing Oil Leak from Iranian Drone Carrier Shahid Bagheri
Misbar’s team on Al-Araby TV analyzed recent satellite images showing ongoing oil leakage from the Iranian drone carrier Shahid Bagheri in an area protected under the Ramsar environmental convention.
Targeting Details of Iranian Drone Carrier Shahid Bagheri
A Sentinel satellite image taken on the morning of March 28, 2026, shows an oil leak from the carrier, reportedly targeted earlier this month, located at least 5 kilometers off the coast at coordinates 27.034194, 56.075750.
Misbar’s team identified the drone carrier by measuring its dimensions, approximately 240 meters long and 32 meters wide. Comparison with other images of the vessel confirms the match, as its deck design is distinct from other Iranian aircraft carriers.
On March 2, the U.S. Central Command announced it had targeted the carrier, stating the strike occurred during the early hours of the military operation against Iran on February 28.
Oil Spill Reported After Attack on Iranian Drone Carrier Shahid Bagheri
The Shahid Bagheri carrier, reportedly targeted earlier this month, continued to leak oil as of March 28, 2026, according to satellite imagery. Due to cloud cover, no images of the carrier immediately after the strike were available. It was first captured on March 16 by Landsat satellites at coordinates 27.033050, 56.076110, showing the oil spill covering at least 22 square kilometers.
Over the following days, the carrier appears to have altered its course, reaching its observed position on March 28 while the oil leak persisted. A clearer image taken on March 18 by Sentinel-2 satellites shows floating oil on the water’s surface.
The spill is occurring within an area protected under the Ramsar Convention for the conservation of wetlands and their resources, first signed in 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar. The United States joined the treaty in 1986, along with dozens of other countries committed to conserving and protecting designated sites.
The area includes two Ramsar sites: the Hara Reserve, also part of UNESCO’s Biosphere Reserves Network and listed under the World Heritage Convention, and the lands of the Khuran Strait between the Iranian coast and Qeshm Island, which encompass the Hara Reserve.
Misbar’s team observed that the Shahid Bagheri carrier was near its current location in a satellite image from February 1, 2026, about a month before U.S. Central Command announced strikes on the vessel.
Analysis by the Chinese company Mezer Vision of a February 2 image showed the carrier’s deck was empty.
Consecutive satellite images from February 11 to 26 show the carrier about five kilometers from Bandar Abbas port, with no noticeable changes to its deck compared with the February 1 image. This may suggest that Iran deliberately evacuated the carrier in anticipation of a potential military strike.
