Misbar’s team tracked the appearance of a U.S. Air Force F-35 fighter jet in Iraqi airspace on Monday, April 6. Flight data from Flightradar24 showed the aircraft transmitting the general emergency code (7700) while flying over Iraq.

The aircraft was first tracked at 06:44 UTC. One minute later, at 06:45, it transmitted the emergency code over the Iraqi city of Al-Basiyah, near the tri-border area with Iran and Kuwait.

An analysis of the aircraft’s flight path during the brief period when tracking signals were active shows the jet followed an erratic trajectory before transmitting code 7700, suggesting it may have executed a maneuver or encountered turbulence that disrupted its stability.

Aircraft Emergency Code

Code 7700 is the general emergency code in an aircraft’s transponder, used to signal serious emergencies such as major technical failures, fires, or critical medical situations. When activated, it appears on air traffic control radar as an immediate alert, indicating the aircraft is in distress and requires priority handling and urgent coordination.

Flight records show the aircraft’s last appearance in the Middle East operational area was on March 29. It was then tracked near Australia on March 31, with its most recent sighting before Monday’s incident occurring over U.S. airspace on April 1.
