Iran — Recent imagery from the Sentinel-2 satellite shows a fire erupting aboard a vessel near the Iranian port of Jask, east of the Strait of Hormuz.

According to images captured on May 9, 2026, and analyzed by Misbar’s team, the burning vessel is located near the Iranian coastline overlooking the Gulf of Oman, specifically at coordinates 25.6139, 57.9483.

The imagery also shows three additional tankers nearby, with at least two of them appearing to display traces resembling fuel leakage.

NASA FIRMS Data

Misbar reviewed fire-detection data from NASA FIRMS and found that thermal signatures associated with the monitored vessel first appeared on Friday, May 8, and continued to be detected through Saturday, May 9.

What Happened on Friday?

According to a statement from United States Central Command, U.S. forces disabled the Iranian oil tankers Sea Star 3 and Sevda before they entered an Iranian port in the Gulf of Oman, alleging they were violating the U.S. maritime blockade imposed on them.

The statement added that the two tankers, both sailing under the Iranian flag, were struck by munitions fired from a Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet operated by the United States Navy from aboard the USS George H. W. Bush on Friday, May 8, 2026.

Identity of the Burning Vessels

Based on the U.S. statement, Misbar matched the dimensions of the vessels visible in the satellite images with those named in the American announcement.

Using measurement tools associated with Sentinel-2 imagery, Misbar identified the dimensions of the burning vessel at approximately 274 meters in length and 49 meters in width — measurements that match the reference dimensions of the Iranian tanker Sevda.

The team also identified the dimensions of a second nearby vessel, around which traces believed to be fuel leakage appeared visible. The vessel measured approximately 333 meters in length and 60 meters in width, matching the reference dimensions of the Iranian tanker Sea Star 3.
