Satellite Images Show Damage Following Munitions Depot Explosion in Southern Aleppo
A series of powerful explosions rocked Aleppo province early Monday, September 21, after a large fire broke out and was followed by an explosion at a munitions depot at a Syrian army site near the town of Al-Eis in the southern countryside.
Misbar’s team at Al-Araby TV analyzed recent satellite images showing the aftermath of the successive explosions at the site.
Satellite Images Show Destruction at Munitions Depot in Southern Aleppo
A visual comparison of satellite images captured by the European Copernicus satellite on September 16 and 21 shows significant changes at the site, indicating the extent of the damage believed to have occurred at the munitions depot in southern Aleppo countryside.
Before the incident, the images showed a cluster of closely packed buildings with clearly defined, light-colored roofs at the center of the military site. Images taken after the explosion show that most of these structures had been almost completely destroyed and leveled, indicating extensive damage to the facility.
The post-explosion images also show a large charred area marked by dark gray discoloration around the blast site and the surrounding open ground.
According to Misbar’s analysis, the imagery is consistent with a major fire and exposure to high temperatures, potentially caused by secondary explosions involving munitions. This may explain the debris scattered around the site and the thick smoke visible over the facility and adjacent areas of bare ground.
The damage appears to be concentrated within a defined area of the military compound, while debris extends into nearby agricultural land. The imagery does not show widespread damage to major roads or more distant residential areas.

Four Civilians Injured in Al-Eis Munitions Depot Explosion
The initial explosion at the munitions depot near the town of Al-Eis in Aleppo’s southern countryside was followed by a series of secondary blasts that continued for hours, delaying the arrival of firefighting and emergency response teams. Authorities subsequently cordoned off the area and temporarily closed the Aleppo-Damascus international highway (M5) and roads leading to the site as a precaution.
The incident injured four civilians, according to the Civil Defense and Aleppo Gov. Azzam al-Gharib. No deaths were reported. Three families living in homes adjacent to the site were also evacuated for their safety.
The Syrian Defense Ministry confirmed the explosion at a military site near Al-Eis, saying the damage was limited to property and that no military personnel were injured.
Engineering units and military police secured the facility, while teams clearing war remnants searched nearby agricultural land and homes for unexploded ordnance. The ministry said it would release the findings of its investigation and hold those responsible accountable in an effort to prevent similar incidents.
