Emerging story

A Yahoo News headline published over Labor Day weekend contained a headline stating, “Trump Declares Himself the Candidate of White America.” The story was reprinted by the Afro Times and shared many times on Twitter.

The Yahoo News story linked to a New York Times piece that contained a headline that is much more subjective. It argues that Trump “casts” himself as the defender of white America.

Yahoo News has since changed its headline to use the same headline as the New York Times piece.

However, Adam Goldman, a colleague of the New York Times reporter who wrote the piece, took to Twitter and used the term “declared” to highlight the story.

To make matters even worse, the Afro Times story ran a photo of four women appearing to wear shirts that read, “Make America White Again.”

But the original photo, taken by photographer Julie Dermansky, had been altered to make the shirt that said “great” appear to say “white.”
