Emerging story

On December 2, 2020, Congresswoman Maxine Waters issued a statement to Bank of America regarding the recent information related to COVID-19 and Bank of Americaโ€™s involvement in impacting families using EDD cards.

She remarked: โ€œAs COVID-19 cases surge, over a million Californians now find themselves out of a job and wondering whether they will sleep under a roof or if they will have food on the table. It is completely unacceptable that Bank of America, which has had an exclusive contract with Californiaโ€™s Employment Development Department to deliver state unemployment benefits through prepaid debit cards, is allowing accounts to be frozen, closed, or drained of money without notice.โ€

With this information, many began discussing this occurrence on social media, raising awareness.
